Cruise the Devil's Backbone

Our friends over at the Westside Street Meet (Scott's group at Coaches at Katy's Saturday Meet) is putting on a cruise this coming Saturday the 21st. I mentioned this to several of you this week-end so I thought I would post up to see who else is interested. My understanding is that we will meet up at the Love's Truckstop near Brookshire (exit 737 Pederson Road) from 8:30 AM until the departure time of 9:00. WE will head west to Luling where we have reservations at 2 Bar B Que restaurants so the 50-60 carload of folks can dine expeditiously. Scot tells me that in Fredricksburg there will be a couple of hours of intermisson time to do as you please, then the cruise will continue with a return to the Houston area between 7:00 to 8:00 PM.

The weather report for Fredericksburg is gorgeous for Saturday !!! Maybe we will have to wash the rides after we clear any bad weather on the way. Ha Ha

According to the organizer this will be a "Scenic Cruise".................but I plan on it being spirited from time to time. After all, we are driving CAMARO's.

Tough to do too much spirited driving in the fun part Devil's Backbone these days.....too many motorcycles and other cars. Maybe January won't be too bad. Back in the 80s - while at SWT - I use really fly thru the twisty part. There is a big loop you can make between Blanco and Wimberly using RM 32, RR12, FM 2325, and RR165. FM 2325 is fairly straight in comparison to RM32, but it has some "rise and falls" (or small hills) that are a lot of fun going over at 65-80mph (think rollercoaster!). Your heart will definitely be in your throat for a moment or two.

Fredericksburg has some pretty cool museums. If your a WWII nut like me you'll want to visit the Pacific War / Nimitz Museum. Admiral Nimitz was from Fredericksburg. The Bush collection is there too. Lots of shops and small restaurants.

We were just up there this past summer.

At 8 a.m. Sat. the weather was less than agreeable, but by the time we got to the Luling exit off I-10 it was clear, sunny, and 57. After everyone wiped down their rides we were off to Luling for bar-b-que, 2 different eateries with good food. Once we left San Marcos the fun began, lots of nice straight runs with hills and a few twisties, several of us got well into the 3 digits on the mph, good roads and very little traffic. We got to Fredsberg around 3 p.m.(too many pit stops) and met at "The Race Barn", a combination OTB/bar with live horse race streaming from across the USA, not really a good place to just hang out if oyu were not into horse racing so the majority of us went into town. A little shopping, ice cream, Shuffler's fudge(Rocky Roads) then back to the Race Barn around 5. Those that needed it gassed up and then it was back on the road thru the actual backbone portion of the ride, lots of twisties. This portion of the ride was done mostly in the dark yet it was still a nice challenge. Ride make-up was I believe 16 cars, 15 fron Houston and 1 from San Antonio(met us in Luling), mostly Mopars, 3 Camaros, some Japanese(2 I beleive) and 1 fast ass truck, Shuffler has no problems keeping up on either portion of the ride-Chevy's rule. All in all it was a very good time, a few tweaks and it will be better next time. For all those who had mechanical break downs and those who blew it off because of the weather, SORRY, you missed a good time. Only 1 mechanical problem on the way up and it was taken care. I did take pics but have not loaded them yet. I do know for me the only down side was the HEAVY DRONE my exhausts put in my car, I WILL NOT go to Indy with that, Coming home it drove me batty. Windows down passable, windows up, worse than water torture. :cool:

Above the text box where you add a post, there is a row of icons. Click the 3rd icon from the end (a picture of a tree) to upload pics. Then use the window that pops up to [choose file] and find the pics on your computer.

I'd recommend following the second set of instructions.

Unfortunately, when you upload them this way, it posts the pictures as small icons that you have to click on to see the full size. If you want the pictures posted full size like in Moni's post, then you'll need an online photo upload account such as photobucket.com.

to be quite honest......the easiest way to post pictures up on our site is to get yourself a photobucket account (which is free), then upload your pictures there and then its as easy as CUT-N-PASTE into your posts.

I think the one mechanical issue Slowburn is talking about was me.:sorry:

Several nights ago, I took the filter off my Vararam for the first time to knock the dust and stuff out. I must have not been paying attention because what ended up happening was, the part that attaches to the throttle body opening came off about 1/2 way. I drove for a couple days like that (probably about 150 miles) and it finally threw a CEL :doh::doh::doh: about 60 miles from Fredricksburg.

I radioed and said I need to check this out, Moni and Mark stayed and helped me figure out that that was the problem, :hug: also my whole stabilitrak system decided to disable itself... not sure why. Onstar seemed to think it was something electrical but nothing serious.

After that, it was smooth sailing, and the CEL went out yesterday. So all is well. Mark, and Moni, I don't remember if I said thank you to you guys for helping me but if I didn't... THANK YOU!! :)
